I do some of my best thinking when I am driving. I have been seeing signs that say “Exit Only” on I-10 for years. I have always assumed it meant that I could only exit but could not get back on the highway. I am interested in getting off and back on when I have to get gas, eat or change drivers. I have often driven many miles because I thought I could not get back on the highway. I just realized that what the sign really means it that the lane is for exit only and if you stay in that lane you must exit and can’t continue on the highway. Also, for years I have been driving down Ina Road to get to Costco. I recently drove down Orange Grove Road for other reasons and realized it was a faster way to get to Costco. I am sure you are now asking yourself what this has to do with divorce and mediation? The connection is assumptions. In divorce and mediation couples come to the process with preconceived ideas about what should happen like I did with the “Exit Only” sign and the Orange Grove route. Like me, the assumptions were not correct or helpful. We always tell couples to keep an open mind and not to make any assumptions. It is not easy but it is a good idea to try.
