I seem to like automobile metaphors for mediation. I hate it when when I am stopped at a traffic light, the light changes, I don’t move fast enough and the car in back of me starts to honk its horn. The driver usually also throws up his or her hand in frustration.
The driver behind is in a rush and has no idea why I am not moving. I could be having mechanical or medical difficulty I follow the car and more often or not we make it to the next stop light at the same time. The driver was rushing for nothing. Honking at the wrong driver could result also in an awful road rage incident. Better to be patient and wait a few seconds.
The lesson for divorce and mediation is that you need to be patient and know the other party’s reasons for their behavior.
